Week 10 - Devlog

We have almost reached the finish of our game project and are polishing all the features we added during the previous weeks.
The goal now is to make everything clearer and more visually pleasing and to tweak out the gameplay.

  • States

In last week's build, the dead and stun state when not smoothed out yet, for example: when you were stunned you could still throw a ball or dodge incoming balls with the dodge mechanic.
For the dead state, you still had collision which was obstructing the players that were alive.

All of these little problems have now been fixed, something extra that we changed is that when you die, you get moved to the sidelines instead of laying on the ground for the remainder of the match.

When you played the game, the scene looked pretty bland, there was not a lot of interesting stuff going on, that is why we added effects and sounds to the game to make everything more interesting and engaging.

  • Ball Bounce

Every time a ball hits something, a dust cloud will be left behind to represent the impact of the ball.
When the ball is of a special type, another bounce effect will be spawned, one that is fitting for the type of the ball.
In tandem with that, a sound will be played, this also depends of the state the ball is in.

  • Ball Trail

To make ball power ups a little more visually pleasing, we added special trails for each type.
So when a fire ball gets thrown, a blazing trail will be left behind, or when an ice ball is thrown, a frosty trail is visible.

  • Character selection

Last week, we added a menu to our game which included a character selection tab.
In this tab, each player can choose in which team they are placed in and which character they are (player 1, 2, ...).
But it was only visualized with text, we have now added functionality that allows us to add images when they are choosing their character, which makes it more understandable for the players.
The only thing for us to do now is make images for each character.

  • Sound

All the sounds that we were creating for the past couple of weeks have finally been added, these sounds are a huge leap forward for player immersion and player feedback.
It is hard to talk about sounds so I suggest you play the game and go discover them for yourself.

  • Level

We also completely changed the vibe of our level, we went from a day scene to a night scene, which creates a different, but in our opinion a way better atmosphere.

  •  Caster

This will be added to the game by next week. The caster will give comments about actions that happen during the game, for example, when a player gets hit the announcer could say. "What a great throw".
